Eat your way to sexy cover

The tape measure on this cover was based on one created in a 3D program but later re-illustrated in Adobe Illustrator for a more slick, clean appearance. The tape measures in other covers in this book series we done the same way.

Yellow pages covers

For this project I was asked to create the skylines of all the major cities across the country. For some I was able to use photographs as reference, for some, Google Earth and, for Toronto, Ottawa and Hull I went and shot my own reference.

Light streaks

The agency had me illustrate a flow of light streaks in high resolution, suitable for application on anything from a business card to a 30 metre hoarding. I painted the image in such a way as to match up the left and right sides so that it could be tiled. This was then applied throughout the Toronto Eaton Centre during their revitalization.

Double pack of coke

The agency needed to advertise the two pack product but it would not be av available in time for photography so they asked me to illustrate it. The pack was modeled in Silo and rendered in Strata Desgin 3D.

Bulging laptop

The objective was to create an image of a laptop so full of content it was bulging. I couldn't distort things too much otherwise it might look strange. The laptop was modeled in Silo and rendered in Strata Desgin 3D.

Netfirms servers

To promote their servers I was asked to create some cool looking images of generic servers. I built a model in my 3D program and rendered it out different ways for a variety of applications.

Transparent syringe

I was asked to created some illustrations of a new syringe design that had a short needle and other new technology embedded. The images were to be used in a brochure promoting it.

Leaf bottle

The customer was looking for an image to help promote their new green bottles, containing organic materials. The bottle was a heavily retouched photograph and the leaf was a 3D model.

Couple on deck

There weren't enough resources to find a location this large and all the products to go in it. So, I planned it out in a 3D program, created the deck and some of the pieces there and photographed all the rest in a variety of places, keeping the lighting even. I stitched it all together later.

gobiz logo

I was asked to replicate an image produced in the U.S. (we needed to do both French and English versions for Canada). I matched the lighting and shapes but, rather than flip the reflection as in the target image I put a shiny surface under my model and rendered it for a more optically correct reflection.

Fish school

Gave up looking for stock shots of fish that I could manipulate into a clean circular/spiral shape. Once again, 3D came to the rescue. I created four 3D fish with slightly different shapes and markings and then orchestrated hundreds of copies of them swirling into this school.

The Gatekeeper cover

I really enjoyed working on this book cover. Normally, all of my art is so clean and precise. For once, here was a great opportunity to go a little crazy with mist, smoke, dirt, cracks, rust and other textural elements.

Coffee for Causes

Seventh in a series. The structure of this image was defined in a 3D program as were many for the prop components. All the people were painted in Corel Painter following various studio shoots of models.

Church painting

I painted this in Painter using a series of photographs as reference. It was then printed out on archival paper, framed and presented to the departing rector of the church as a keepsake when he moved on to another assignment.

Telus bundle icons

These bundle icons only ever appeared in print and at the end of a TV commercial. Still they ware created in the same way as all the other icons produced so far to ensure a consistent family look.

Holiday snowman

Third in a series. The scene was created in a 3D program but repainted in Painter after the people were inserted from studio shots where I matched the lighting to the 3D scene. I loved painting the snow.

ibac elevator buttons

These buttons formed the main desgin element for a group of brochures. In each brochure one of the buttons was highlighted in colour. I modeled and rendered the bank of buttons in 3D. The colour was inserted after as it needed to be a 2 spot colour print job.

Blockbuster feet

The source for this painting was assembled from a variety of photographs I had taken plus some 3D elements. I only started painting the image once everyone was happy with the arrangement of the components.

Anti-litter poster

The original brief called for a beautiful scene that upon closer inspection was marred by the presence of litter. I invested a fair amount of effort on the trees. This was one of those images that is so big it can be cropped in a variety of ways and still look good. Click on the enlarge button and you'll see the full image.

Chrome Lettering

This chrome had to look photographic so, in addition to painting in a style that is slightly different to what we'd normally think of as chrome, I also left a few dents and errors in it so it wouldn't look too perfect.

Clean hands poster

I illustrated this little guy from a sketch by the art director. This was one of my first opportunities to use a subdivision modeler. The experience was pleasant. I used Silo for the modeling and Strata Studio Pro for the rendering

Bladder & urinary tracts

The objective was to have the organs rising up out of the background texture (visible only in the enlarged version). The organs were modeled in 3D rendered and heavily retouched for this poster.

3D environment

My task was to create a 3D environment that would be sufficiently interesting and intriguing for the model to want to put her hand through it. Chris Gordaneer shot the model and I then dropped her into my illustration.
